Golf simulator ceiling height guide
How much height you need for a full swing, by player height, and what to do if you are short.

Ceiling height is the one dimension you can't work around. Width and depth have workarounds; with the ceiling, you either clear the club or you don't [1]. Trackman calls it the most common limitation and the hardest to fix after the fact [3].
The short answer
- 10 ft: the practical minimum for most golfers to swing comfortably [3]. Rain or Shine and Carl's Place both recommend it [1] [2].
- 9 ft: workable for most people, but not all [1].
- 8 ft: an irons-and-wedges room. Trackman says full swings at 8 ft aren't recommended for long-term use [1] [3].
By player height
| Player height | Minimum ceiling | Comfortable ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5'6" | 8.5 ft | 9 ft |
| 5'6" to 5'9" | 9 ft | 9.5 ft |
| 5'10" to 6'0" | 9.5 ft | 10 ft |
| 6'1" to 6'3" | 10 ft | 10.5 ft |
| Over 6'3" | 10.5 ft | 11 ft |
Table from Golf Simulator Guide [9]. It assumes a standard modern driver. The guide suggests adding 3 to 6 inches if your swing is upright, and you may manage with a little less if it's notably flat [9]. Our calculator uses this table.
Measure the right thing
- Measure to the lowest obstruction in your swing path: beams, ducts, lights, a garage-door track [1] [2].
- Subtract floor build-up from turf or a subfloor, and anything that hangs down, like a projector or overhead launch monitor [1].
- Overhead launch monitors have their own height rules. Trackman iO needs at least 9 ft 4 in [5]. Uneekor's EYE XO/XO2 mounts at 9 to 10 ft, and Foresight's Falcon at 9.5 to 10.5 ft [2].
The driver test
Take your driver into the room. Make a slow, deliberate swing, then real ones, and note any hesitation [7] [3]. Trackman points out that even slight awareness of the ceiling changes your swing, which can show up in speed and attack angle [3].
If your ceiling is short
- Choose a launch monitor that sits on the floor beside the ball, not one mounted overhead [1].
- Choose a 16:9 screen, which is wider and shorter and suits a room where the ceiling is the constraint [1].
- Plan the room around irons and wedges, which is still a genuinely useful practice space [1].
- Use rated impact netting overhead. Trackman lists it, along with testing and adequate clearance, as the best way to protect a ceiling [3].
