How the calculator decides
It checks three dimensions against published guidance. Then it sizes the parts that depend on them.
- Ceiling: compared with a minimum and a comfortable height for your height band [9]. Trackman calls 10 ft the practical minimum for most golfers [3]. Rain or Shine Golf calls 9 ft workable and treats 8 ft as an irons room [1].
- Width: 10 ft works for one golfer with the tee offset. About 14 ft lets you centre the tee for righties and lefties [1] [2].
- Depth: about 1 ft behind the screen, 10 to 12 ft from ball to screen, and about 7 ft behind the ball, which adds up to 18 ft. 15 ft is the floor [1] [2].
- Launch monitor: radar units need room behind you [6] [4] [3]. Overhead units need ceiling height [5] [2]. Camera units beside the ball need neither [1].
- Enclosure: the largest of the 8, 10, 12 and 13 ft studio sizes whose published minimum room your space meets [7].
- Screen and projector: 16:9 suits rooms where the ceiling is the limit, and 4:3 suits rooms with height to spare [1]. The throw ratio comes from BenQ's formula [8].

Frequently asked questions
How much room do you need for a golf simulator?
Retailers Rain or Shine Golf and Carl's Place both describe a room about 10 ft high, 14 ft wide and 18 ft deep as the size where nothing is a compromise. Rain or Shine calls 15 ft deep, 10 ft wide and 9 ft high the honest minimum for a full swing.
What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?
Trackman calls 10 ft the practical minimum for most golfers. Rain or Shine Golf calls 9 ft workable, and describes an 8 ft room as an irons-and-wedges room. Taller players and upright swings need more height, so test with your own driver.
How wide does a simulator room need to be for left- and right-handed golfers?
About 14 ft lets you centre the tee so both can play without moving the mat (Rain or Shine Golf, Carl's Place). About 10 ft can work for one golfer if the tee is offset toward one wall.
How deep does a room need to be for a radar launch monitor?
Radar units sit behind the golfer. Garmin's R10 manual specifies 6 to 8 ft behind the tee and at least 8 ft from the tee to the net, which works out to about 15 ft once you leave a foot behind the screen. Trackman recommends about 18 ft or more from screen to unit for its Trackman 4.
What projector throw ratio do I need for a golf simulator?
BenQ says throw ratios from 0.5 to 1.1 are common for golf simulators, and 0.69 to 0.89 is a practical balance in standard home rooms. Throw ratio equals throw distance divided by image width.
